Rework by 37 Signals

Like Gordon Gekko once said “Because everyone is drinking the same Kool Aid“, and just because everybody in the business (the web business i mean) is drinking “Rework” by 37 Signals, i also drinked it too…. so what’s my taste of this book?

It’s a complex taste book, not because it digs deep the rabbit-hole, but because it (tries to) speak all things about the business universe, it goes from (unordered list) planning, to meetings, to time management, customer management, task prioritization, hiring and firing, office policies, marketing, product building, product minimalism, workaholism, by-products, productivity, startups, etc, etc….

It’s filled with common sense (is not so common) and Lapalissades, witch makes one feel smart:

«Failure is not a prerequisite of success.» – I knew that

«Forgoing sleep is a bad ideia.» – I also knew that

«Other people’s failures are just that: other people’s failures» – Duhh

«Revenue in, expenses out, Turn a profit or wind up gone.» – Heck, even the tavern owner where i go for cheap drinks knows this

«If you want to get someones attention, it’s silly to do exactly the same thing as everyone else.» –  I rest my case

But in the other hand, you are always making reality checks, comparing your own practices with the ones described in the book, and this review is obviously good.

Anyway, the work smart not hard philosophy makes sense, there are some good marketing tips, i really liked the teach and spread your secrets of the trade approach. It also makes a strong point about minimalistic products, those products that you strip down to the core, make them easier, cheaper, maintainable. Likewise, they don’t like guys throwed in suits (about#hate) and useless meetings (about#hate) ….. ahhhh…that was good for my ego.

The final balance is positive, everyone can get good ideias out of it, but is not the “fabulous”, “best book in my life and afterlife” hype that you read in Amazon reviews.

Here some of my favorite quotes:

«When you treat people like children, you get children’s work»

«And when everything is high priority, nothing is»

«Business are usually paranoid and secretive. They think they have proprietary this and competitive advantage that. Maybe a rare few do, but most don’t»

«Having the idea for eBay has nothing to do with actually creating eBay»

«The worst interruptions of all are meetings»

«How long someone’s been doing it is overrated. What matters is how well they’ve been doing it»

How?

Real simple, just set-up “ProxyRequests Off” on the main server config, and if you want to be extra safe (like double condom usage) in the first virtualhost (by IP address) put “ProxyBlock *”

So help me the sysadmins Gods.

(semi) Victorious

Last Friday (finally, 8 months after the accident) i received the court decision about the process against Allianz Seguros SA. I had to sue them in CIMPAS, an arbitration court, about a road accident, where i was hit and run by i an Allianz insured shit bag (pardon… driver) and they didn’t want to willingly pay the damages.

So, the outcome was very positive, it was proved in court that all responsibility is due to Allianz Seguros SA, so all the physical damages to the car are well covered, but i was only given 30 euro a day for the 3 days the car must be in the repair shop, which is very little to cover a substitution car. Also the judge didn’t order Allianz Seguros to pay the vehicle technical inspections (mot, tuv, etc) and re-inspections simply because he didn’t quite understand that i had to do it so i didn’t get fined by the police…. i think that he doesn’t quite understands the mechanics of technical inspections time frame, maybe he gets a new car every 3 years… if this is the new justice, i really can’t imagine how the old justice works…

Anyway, after all said and done, this is a financial and moral victory against an evil corporation (Allianz Seguros) that is profit centered only, and treats persons like numbers, that uses all the dirty tricks in the book to avoid paying. But, and it seems there is always a but, i will never get the right compensation for all the headaches of this situation, and these companies will continue to behave the same, just because they can, because the justice here is too soft with them.

More about this issue later…

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

The marketing advantage of young people

I was listening Deolinda’s song “Parva que Sou”,  very buzzed nowadays due to the strong lyrics about the lack of opportunities given to the young people, and found myself thinking what a piece of crap….  Why? To start the melody is non-existent, and the so called “strong” lyrics are pathetic.

Is plain pathetic to say young people can’t get good jobs, because they are all already taken, and they can’t start their own business because they have no capital, and the lack of capital trows them to poorly paid jobs, which just creates a perpetual loop. So, this is an unfair world and the poor young guy is always with the lower hand. Right? Wrong.

There are so many advantages to the young people… but in this post i would like to highlight the marketing advantages. One can legitimately ask, if a young entrepreneur has little to no money stock, what is the advantage to the established players with much more cash flow to invest in marketing and advertising? Is pretty simple, they can do it better with much less money. How? Exploring the potential of guerrilla marketing to their own profit. The new technologies, the new communication medias, the new languages. They rule the Internet inside out, the websites, the social networks, the blogs, the forums, the chats, the new mobile medias. They know what is cool, what is uncool. What a great marketing advantage that is.

So, i really don’t know about you, but i sure have my own plans to keep “young” as long as i can, keep up with the upcoming medias and technologies so i can take on the “old” guys who do business the same as they did twenty years ago.

PS – and of course, the song who made me think about this, well… i can’t identify me less with it
